The Lived Experience of Non-Binary Counselors Who Encounter Microaggressions: Impact on Professional Development
D. J. Griffith
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capella University
This dissertation investigated the lived experiences of non-binary counselors who face microaggressions within the counseling field. While existing research has explored microaggressions based on sexual orientation within counselor education programs, there is a significant gap in the literature regarding non-binary counselors specifically. This study aimed to illuminate the microaggressions that non-binary counselors encounter, addressing a crucial need for further research to support this marginalized group, highlight occurrences of discrimination, and minimize the resulting harm. The primary research question guiding this study was: What is the lived experience of non-binary counselors who face microaggressions? To explore this phenomenon, the study employed an interpretative phenomenological analysis methodology, chosen for its ability to give participants a voice to express how microaggressions impact their daily lives. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews with non-binary counselors, focusing on their experiences of microaggressions within their careers. The population for this study included non-binary counselors practicing in agencies and private practices across the United States. Data analysis involved a detailed examination of the interview transcripts to identify common themes and patterns in the participants' experiences. The analysis followed the IPA framework, emphasizing the subjective interpretation of the participants' lived experiences. Findings indicated that non-binary counselors frequently encounter microaggressions that undermine their professional efficacy and personal well-being. Six themes became apparent from this research: (a) "negative impact on mental health," (b) "systemic perpetuation of ignorance and prejudice," (c) "influence on professional identity development," (d) "feeling disrespected and misunderstood due to misgendering," (e) "difficulty finding a sense of belonging," and (f) "uncertainty when addressing microaggressions." The study concluded that addressing these microaggressions is critical for fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for non-binary counselors. Future research should focus on developing targeted interventions and policies to mitigate the impact of microaggressions and promote equity within the counseling profession.
