Community College Stereotype on Academic Efficacy and Psychological Wellbeing

There has been a particular emphasis on the ways that an individual's concept of self and their own perceived academic competence is influenced by their socio and external environment (Bandura, 1999; Baumeister, 1999). However, existing research has provided little to no focus on how these internalized beliefs of self, and perceived academic competence, influence an individual's emotional state and academic flourishing. Therefore, this paper will focus on whether internalizing a negative stereotype of community college could have an impact on an individual's self-construct, academic efficacy, and emotional health. Although the literature is sparse, and there is no evidence indicating the existence nor the direct impact that community college stereotypes have on a student's academic efficacy and psychological Wellbeing, it is the hope that a thorough exploration of identity development and stereotype development would provide better insight into the ways that community college reputability may be impacting student's emotional and psychological Wellbeing.
