Teachers' Perceptions of Administration Traits and School Climate

Through this research, 51 administration traits (which encompasses character attributes, leadership responsibilities, biological factors, and professional factors) were listed in order from most impactful to least impactful by sending out the Administration Traits Questionnaire to 3 rural school districts in the Midwest part of the United States (Table 1). Through the teachers' perceptions on this survey, character attributes and leadership responsibilities are considered the most impactful grouping of traits. Furthermore, the overall most impactful trait is 'the administrator should be respectful and considerate to teachers, staff, and students when interacting with them.' The top ten traits for each school district were also listed in Table 2. These coincided with the top traits from all 3 school districts. Additionally, through phone interviews, these results were reiterated by 3 teachers from each school district (9 total) when discussing their perceptions of most impactful traits. The phone interviews revealed that teachers believe the character of the administrator does impact their school in a myriad of ways. To explore this, the researcher used the School Level Environment Questionnaire, and was able to measure the mean school climate score for Grades 7-8 and Grades 9-12 in each district. Each one had a normal distribution when examining at the mean and standard deviation. Looking at the climate factors for each building, it was found that Work Pressure and Decision Making was found to be the lowest for each building. School Resources, Teacher Collaboration/Affiliation, and Student Relations/Support scored the highest for each school building.
