Platicas and Consejos: Mothers' Experience with First-Generation College Going Daughter
Yesenia Vargas
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, California State University, Bakersfield
This study focuses on the mother's experience when her first-generation college student attends college and the mother-daughter relationship. The goal is to understand further the mother's perspective and the relationship between mother and daughter. At the same time, the study aims to add to the literature about the parental college experience and the impact these mothers have on their daughters. For this study, a snowball sampling method was used, which gathered seven participants who self-identify as being of Mexican descent and had a first-generation female daughter who attends/attended college while she lives/lived at home. The results yield four themes by utilizing the phenomenology approach: (a) Feeling of Uncertainty, (b) Life Experience, (c) Fond Memories, and (d) Strong Communication. These four themes are essential to this study because they demonstrate how a mother processes part of this new experience of having a daughter attend college and how their dynamic relationship works in this transition period. In addition, two other findings emerge that provide insight into the family dynamic and values: religion and the differences between mother and daughter. Overall, these findings demonstrate the impact and influence these mothers had on their daughter's college journey and the anguish they felt as a parent when faced with difficult situations.
