ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Wingate University
This research study focuses on students' and faculty's awareness and preparedness during an active-shooter event. The study examines the perceptions and abilities of the students and faculty at a large southern university. The study surveys the participants current ability to use and their opinions of using the emergency alert notification system and the active-shooter training the University provides. The point of this study is to understand how prepared campus students and faculty are for an active-shooter event and to see if they are aware of the steps and recommendations that the University outlines in its alert notification training and safety protocols. This approach was completed using a mixed methods analysis of survey results and one-on-one interviews. This study looked at five research questions surrounding students' and faculty's awareness of and preparedness for an active-shooter event. The survey utilized a random sample of 4,000 participants, including 3,000 undergraduate and graduate on-campus students and 1,000 permanent full-time employees. The quantitative survey data was analyzed using an independent samples t-test analysis. The results concluded that students and faculty express a significant difference in their perception of preparedness for an active-shooter event based on the following variables: university materials on the website, active shooter in-class and campus discussions, and active-shooter material in syllabi. Based on survey and interview results, recommendations for increased awareness and preparedness for students are suggested to be implemented on campus and within classrooms.
