Pedagogy of Cariño: A Co-Constructed Framework with Puente Faculty
Cynthia Cordova
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, San Diego State University
The purpose of this study was to understand how Puente Project community college faculty experience and conceptualize carino in the Puente Summer Institute training context and how carino is enacted with students. In this research, I used a grounded theory approach informed by culturally relevant and carino pedagogies as conceptual frameworks to examine Puente faculty members' experiences and conceptualizations of carino. I used testimonio methodology to cocreate knowledge with 10 Puente coconstructors through semistructured interviews. Coconstructors shared their experiences of the Puente Summer Institute training, how they understood carino in relation to themselves and others, and how they demonstrated carino to their students. The cyclical analysis process revealed three major themes: (a) Carino de Colegas: Cultural and Familial Liberation, (b) Tu Eres mi Otro yo: Embracement of the Whole Self, and (c) Enactment of Armed Carino. These findings served as the groundwork for developing a coconstructed framework with Puente faculty for pedagogy of carino. Pedagogy of carino is a model illuminating how the alignment of cultural liberation, embracement of the whole self, and acts of intentional carino can transform how community college faculty cultivate carino with their own students. This model can guide professional development that supports faculty by embodying a culturally relevant pedagogy into practice with genuine carino. Culturally relevant practices can become a shared responsibility among all community college faculty, instead of over-relying on specific equity-program faculty to address disproportionately impacted students from racially diverse and marginalized backgrounds. Understanding the depths of how faculty experience caring practices and the recognition of their power to shape students' educational journeys is at the "corazon" (heart) of how to cultivate authentic love through armed carino for both faculty and students.
