Improving Opportunities for Authentic Family Engagement: Understanding How Family Structure, Socioeconomic Factors and Varied Options for Engagement Can Impact Home-School Connections in K-12 Public Education
Laurie Havrisko
ProQuest LLC, D.Phil. Dissertation, Point Park University
Public school leaders in Kindergarten through grade 12 school systems must support teachers in understanding and valuing diverse types of Family Engagement. Regular Family Engagement can have positive outcomes for students, including increased academic success, social-emotional stability, and opportunities for community involvement (Arce, 2019; Mapp et al., 2022; Miller et al., 2012; NAFSCE, 2022). The philosophical frameworks of cultural relevance, the hierarchy of needs, hermeneutics and phenomenology were applied to the research. This mixed methods study analyzed the responses of 302 participants in order to identify barriers to Family Engagement, factors that impact Family Engagement, and strategies that should be implemented in order to support Family Engagement in the K-12 public education setting. Results found that Family Engagement often occurs outside of the school setting and through activities that are not often visible to school staff. Additionally, economic status and family structure can significantly impact a family's ability to engage with their child's education. Themes identified during this study included the need for empathy and understanding from school staff, clear communication between school staff and families, varied opportunities for involvement, building a sense of community and celebrating student success. Implications for policy and practice include the need for ongoing professional development related to Family Engagement strategies, as well as introducing Family Engagement into teacher preparation programs. School leaders should also reserve time throughout the school year to support teachers in building relationships with families in order to strengthen home-school connections. Direct, purposeful methods of encouraging varied types of Family Engagement will support success for all students.
