Teachers' Perceptions of Social-Emotional Competencies and Online Social-Emotional Content Delivery
Karen M. Waddell
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Regent University
Building upon the work of Cooney (2021) and Finch (2016), this quantitative study sought to explore if there was a correlation between kindergarten through fifth-grade general education teachers' perceived level of social-emotional competence (SEC) and their implementation of social-emotional learning (SEL) through instructional practice within the online classroom environment. The study also sought to determine if there was any correlation between elementary general education teachers' years of experience within the online classroom and their implementation of SEL through instructional practice in the online environment. Using a modified version of the 2014 Self-Assessing Social and Emotional Instruction and Competencies instrument (published by the Center on Great Teachers and Leaders at the American Institutes for Research), SEC was measured in the five core competencies: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. This study found that the perceived SEC of general elementary online teachers greatly affects social-emotional teaching practices within the online environment, with the areas of self-awareness, self-management, and relationship skills each significantly predicting the inclusion of SEL instructional practices. The data also provided evidence that the number of years of experience within the online classroom environment cannot predict a teacher's ability to support SEL within the online elementary general education classroom. Along with guiding teachers regarding the importance of modeling SEC, the study provides implications for practice in the areas of teacher training, teacher retention, and the hiring practices of online teachers.
