In the Eye of the Beholder: Student Perceptions of Campus Police
Tracy A. Stuart
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Stockton University
Campus public safety plays an essential role in student retention and success at any university or college. To best support students' emotional and physical security, campus police should be aware of their perceptions and expectations of the police as the law enforcement entity directly responsible for their safety. This quantitative study investigated students' pre-college perceptions of police and their current views of the institutional contributions and roles of campus police. Survey results from a convenience sample of 361 university students showed that most students understand the safety role of campus police and view them favorably. However, a disproportionate number of students of color were skeptical about police truthfulness, the appropriateness of their actions, and their effectiveness as institutional resources. There were significant gender differences in some findings, and in the free-response survey items, students provided valuable suggestions for more interaction between police and students.
