An Examination of the Factors That Affect the Recruitment and Retention of African American Male Teachers in Public Schools
Brandon M. Moore
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, University of Arkansas at Little Rock
The purpose of this qualitative explanatory case study is to explain the underrepresentation of African American male teachers in public school education in the state of Arkansas through the lens of the teacher diversity gap and organizational commitment. Participants included 10 African American male teachers who taught in grades K-12 in public schools. The primary source of data collection was completed through the use of semi structured interviews via Zoom. Findings indicated that school districts, educational agencies and the local government should collectively increase their efforts to successfully recruit African American males to the teaching profession. Specifically, the findings suggested that school districts, educational agencies and the local government work together to (a) develop a high school to college African American male teacher pipeline; (b) increase advocacy, awareness and respect for the teaching profession; (c) establish meaningful college and high school partnerships; (d) HBCUs actively recruit African American male teacher candidates; (e) provide tuition assistance for aspiring African American male teachers; (f) provide Praxis payment assistance for African American male teacher candidates; (g) implement semester long Praxis preparation courses and; (h) provide novice African American male teachers with mentors. Additionally, it is suggested that future research replicate this study in different states to identify any trends, explore the policies and procedures implemented by school districts to recruit African American males and investigate the experiences of African American, Hispanic, and low socio-economic background Praxis test-takers regarding potential biases in standardized tests.
