An Analysis of a Professional Development Intervention on Academic Advisors' Knowledge of the Reverse Transfer Process
Melissa Madeline Musser
ProQuest LLC, D.Ed. Dissertation, Tarleton State University
While community colleges intend for their students to complete their associate degree before transferring to a university, that is not always the case. Many students transfer when they are only a few course credits short of an associate degree. The study was conducted at a public university in Texas. The option of the reverse transfer process became an accepted practice in Texas in 2011 and is currently available in seven states as of 2024. By providing students the information about the reverse transfer process, students will benefit by obtaining their associate degree after the remaining credits are completed at their transfer university, community colleges will benefit by awarding additional associate degrees, and universities will benefit by improving their community college relationships. This study observed the knowledge academic advisors at a regional university in Texas of the reverse transfer process by conducting a pre-survey, professional development intervention, and a post-survey. The intervention was aligned with Lewin's (1947) Three Stage Model of Change Theory, which represents unfreezing old knowledge, change, and refreezing new knowledge based on the hypothesis that knowledge of reverse transfer would increase after the professional development intervention was conducted.
