The Role One's Cultural Lens Plays in a Multi-National School Team Environment
Chad Ovid McNatt
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Concordia University Chicago
This qualitative study sought to provides insights around the central research question, "What role does a school employee's cultural lens play in the cohesiveness and effectiveness among multi-national teams serving in private domestic and international schools within the Association of Christian Schools International and Network of International Christian Schools?" The study was anchored in a grounded theory design and utilized purposeful sampling to determine which schools and individual participants would meet the participant criteria of being a school employee on a team where three or more nationalities are represented and whose nationality is different than the majority of employees at the school. 22 participants from eight schools across four continents were interviewed for this study. Out of these interview results, twelve sub-themes were carefully discerned in relation to three research sub-questions which distilled down to two major themes: posture and approach. Results indicate that if a person has a posture of humility and curiosity in combination with an approach of intentionality, not only does it positively impact that person's experiences and effectiveness, but that of the entire team, ultimately serving as a bridge between diversity and unity. Recommendations for application include investing in individual school employees, particularly in multi-national settings, to gauge and develop their postures and approaches, developing teams with the understanding of these findings that they may increase in effectiveness and unity, and applying these results more broadly to any diverse team environment beyond school settings.
