Uncivil Behaviors between Dental Hygiene Students and Faculty: Perceptions of Community College Students
Kimberly A. Erdman-Beadencup
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Morgan State University
The purpose of this quantitative study was to use Social Learning Theory to explore perceptions of community college dental hygiene students and the differences between their perceptions of student incivility versus their perceptions of faculty incivility. The researcher also investigated which interventions community college dental hygiene students perceived would significantly improve civility in dental hygiene education programs. The participants in this study were dental hygiene students from three community colleges in a Mid-Atlantic state. This quantitative study employed correlational methods to analyze data from the Incivility in Nursing Education-Revised Survey, which was modified to fit the depth and breadth of this study. Program year was a significant predictor of the extent of overall civility, perceptions of lower and higher levels of student incivility, higher levels of faculty incivility, frequencies of student incivility, and frequencies of faculty incivility. The results presented in this study have contributed new information to the literature about how community college dental hygiene students in a Mid-Atlantic state perceive incivility.
