Essays in Economics of Education
Don Tawanpitak
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, University of Florida
This dissertation studies the effect of higher education costs on students' outcomes in the labor market, particularly when credit constraints are absent. It utilizes the UK's institutional setting to identify such an effect. The key findings are as follows. (i) Increasing tuition fees does not have adverse effects on students as long as credit constraints are sufficiently relaxed. (ii) Firms could use tuition fees as a signal of worker's productivity. If they do, a change in tuition fees for one educational level will affect the wages of workers in all educational levels. (iii) There is some support that firms use tuition fees as a signal of worker's productivity, but further evidence is still required.
