A Qualitative Case Study of Teacher Experiences on Implementing Social-Emotional Learning Strategies
Margaret Rein
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, American College of Education
The problem is teachers' professional experiences with students are not considered when developing a social-emotional learning curriculum to implement with students in an elementary school in north Georgia. Research on social-emotional learning strategies consistently emphasized the importance of including curriculum in the school setting to enhance students' social skills. In examining the development of social-emotional skills in adolescents, researchers highlighted the importance of cognitive student development. A social-emotional learning curriculum was being implemented at a north Georgia elementary school. This qualitative case study examined teachers' experiences regarding social-emotional learning strategies and the resulting effects on classroom planning and curriculum implementation. Teachers discussed viewpoints regarding developing and implementing a social-emotional learning curriculum. The theoretical framework design for this study incorporated Goleman's social-emotional learning theory with emotional intelligence. Guiding questions focused on teachers' perceptions of the benefits and challenges of developing and implementing the curriculum. Eighteen elementary school teachers completed an online questionnaire. Seven of the teachers participated in an online focus group. Data was prepared, cleaned, and analyzed using a digital software program. As a result of the data analysis, codes were developed, and themes were derived, including incorporation into academic content instruction, ideas for curriculum development teams, use of instructional time, building relationships with students, and teacher experiences. Results of the study recommended providing teachers with adequate and relevant training and more opportunities to build relationships with students.
