Telehealth Education in Self-Management of Type 2 Diabetes: Findings from Jackson Randomized Telehealth Diabetes Project
Austine U. Onyia
ProQuest LLC, Dr.P.H. Dissertation, Jackson State University
Telehealth is the use of telecommunication technologies such as telephones, electronic mail systems, fax machines, and remote monitoring devices to collect and transmit patient information for enhanced monitoring and interpretation. Telehealth applications include mobile health (mHealth), remote patient monitoring, and synchronous and asynchronous video conferencing. The use of telehealth technology is not new, but its adoption and widespread use by patients and healthcare providers has - been relatively slow. The recent COVID-19 pandemic has raised awareness of the need for expanding remote patient monitoring. Telehealth educational interventions are effective in improving the self-management of type 2 diabetes. Using secondary data obtained from a randomized control study conducted in Jackson, Hinds County, Mississippi, this study examined the role of telehealth education in the self-management of type 2 diabetes. Outcome measures included glycemic control, self-reported diabetes knowledge, and diabetes-related behaviors. The result showed a significant group-time interaction which indicates that the impact of the intervention on diabetes self-management outcomes changes over time. This finding highlights the need to consider both the intervention and time factors to comprehensively understand how the intervention affects the outcome variable for different groups at different points in time.
