Big Five Personality Traits and Perceived Job Stress among K-12 Special Education Teachers
Chasity Echo Johnson
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Grand Canyon University
The purpose of this quantitative correlational-predictive study was to assess if and to what extent the Big Five Personality Traits (Openness, Conscientiousness, Extroversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism), individually and combined, predict Perceived Job Stress among K-12 special education teachers in US. The study was guided by the theoretical foundations of Costa and McCrae's Big Five Personality Traits and Biddle's Role theory. Data were collected using the BFI and the PSS-10 from a sample of 95 K-12 Special Education teachers. Two questions tested to what extent the Big Five Personality Traits, individually (RQ2) and combined (RQ1), predicted Perceived Job Stress among K-12 special education teachers. Multiple regression analysis was used to test the null hypotheses. The model predicted 54.7% of the variance, was significant (F = 21.501, p < 0.001), and the null hypothesis for RQ1 was rejected. The RQ2 null hypotheses for H20b (Conscientiousness) ([beta] = -0.460, p < 0.001) and H20e (Neuroticism) ([beta] = 0.492, p < 0.001) were rejected, but the null hypothesis for H20a (Openness) ([beta] = 0.098, p = 0.338), H20c (Extroversion) ([beta] = 0.081, p = 0.218), and H20d (Agreeableness) ([beta] = -0.127, p = 0.336) failed to be rejected. Hence, Conscientiousness and Neuroticism were good predictors of Perceived Job Stress, while Openness, Extroversion and Agreeableness were not good predictors. Administrators can use the results of this study when hiring they type of special education teachers who can better manage job stress.
