Before the Journey: Pre-Departure Experiences and Challenges of First-Generation College Students Who Studied Abroad
Michele Rita Pino
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Alliant International University
The purpose of this study was to explore and make meaning of the lived experiences of traditional first-generation college students who studied abroad for academic credit through a college or university-sponsored study abroad program for at least one undergraduate academic term. Semi-structured narrative interviews were conducted with five participants meeting the study's inclusion criteria. Working through a lens of Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, four super-ordinate themes were identified: (a) barriers, (b) personal support systems and resources, (c) institutional support systems and resources, and (d) outcomes.
