First-Generation Students and Student Support Programs
Tamara N. Massay-Trotz
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Saint Peter's University
Historical influence in present day education contributes to the continuous conversation of equity in higher education systems. In the process of understanding inequalities and exploring the academic achievements of first-generation low-income students (FGLI), this paper summarizes generational effects on the academic journey within the community. Student support programs such as federal TRIO programs and state-based EOF programs work to reduce the experiential gaps amongst FGLI. The exploration of archived data portrays evidence of academic support programs contributing factors amongst FGLI students in the four-year academic achievement at Greene University.
