A Narrative Study on Transformational Leadership and Employee Inspiration, Motivation, and Mentorship at Christian Higher Education Institutions
John S. T. Abbosey
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Carolina University, Piedmont Divinity School
The purpose of this qualitative narrative research was to explore employees' experiences of being inspired, motivated, and mentored by transformational leaders in Christian higher education institutions in Ghana. From the employees' perspective, outcomes achieved from such interactions were examined, as aligned with current theories of transformational leadership. Previous research indicated a positive relationship between the application of transformational leadership and employee outcomes in organizations, such as high productivity, motivation, and improved performance. This study investigated the extent to which employees of transformational leaders were inspired, motivated, and mentored. Ten individuals who self-identify as working with transformational leaders were selected through snowball sampling and interviewed. Results revealed three main themes: inspiration sprang from the leader's interest in the employee; motivation was found in challenging employees to strive for self-development; and mentorship was derived from opportunities provided for employees to grow. In addition, some transformational leaders enjoyed positive relationships with students. Some leaders also freely applied faith practices such as prayer in their leader-employee relationships. For future research, it was recommended that similar investigations be conducted in other organizations, and more focus be placed on leader-student interactions. This contributes to the empirical research literature on leader-employee perspectives of the practice of transformational leadership in Christian higher education institutions.
