Teachers' Perceptions of Attrition in Low Socioeconomic Status Schools: Exploring Administrative Support

Teacher attrition is known to be a problem in education globally. The term refers to the departure of teachers from their current position as a classroom teacher, whether to take up a different teaching position within another school or district or to transition into an administrative role. Teachers are leaving the profession in large numbers, which can have a negative impact on the quality of instruction and students' learning. The financial cost of teacher attrition is also significant, at an estimated 2.2 billion dollars annually. The severity of teacher attrition in the United States necessitates finding a reasonable solution to this ongoing concern worldwide. Previous studies have identified the lack of administrative support as a significant factor in teacher attrition, although the literature does not provide extensive details on the role that administration plays in teachers leaving. Nonetheless, it is essential for teachers to be managed by a strong leader. The purpose of this descriptive qualitative study is to explores the role of administrators and the factors that contribute to teachers' decisions to leave schools in low socioeconomic areas. By understanding the factors that contribute to teacher attrition, districts can use such research to develop evidence-based programs and resources aimed at reducing teacher turnover rates. These programs can, in turn, help the district financially by reducing the costs associated with recruiting, rehiring, and retaining new educators.
