Connection, Community, and Culture: An Exploration of Graduate Student Sense of Belonging in a Multimodality Master's Program
Jessica T. McCarthy
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northeastern University
Graduate students are an often-overlooked student population in a traditional undergraduate institution, but these students provide significant enhancement to the culture of a college or university. This study investigated how instructional modalities and other critical factors impact graduate student experience and sense of belonging. Participants and data collected in Cycle 1 consisted of fully matriculated graduate students in a Master of Education (M.Ed.) program and offered insight into the elements that affect a graduate student's sense of belonging. Action steps were designed, implemented, and evaluated in Cycle 2 to create several engagement activities to enhance graduate student connection. The engagement activities were offered in various modalities--online or on-campus--and varying days and times, striving to provide equitable opportunities for all graduate students. Additionally, a central communication portal was developed as a supporting initiative to provide consistent and unifying messaging to all graduate students. Evaluating the action research study was primarily conducted through semi-structured interviews with graduate students, regardless of their participation in the engagement activities. Findings indicate that a one-size-fits-all approach to graduate student engagement is detrimental to their sense of belonging. Engagement opportunities may not generate high participation rates, as graduate students with additional commitments and responsibilities will make a day-of decision whether they are able to participate. Nevertheless, the effort is appreciated by the graduate students, and knowing these opportunities are available enhances their connection to the institution. Implications for the organization include maintaining consistent and accurate communications to graduate students, and providing regular engagement opportunities that fit within a complex schedule of personal and professional commitments that support their connection to the institution, the academic program, and to their peers.
