A Study of the Experience of Belizean College Students on Academic Probation
Solangel Leiva Alvarado
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Saint Louis University
The purpose of this study was to describe the lived experiences of Belizean junior college students who are on or have experienced academic probation at junior colleges in Belize. A qualitative narrative inquiry research design was implemented to carry out this study. To understand the experiences of students who are or have overcome academic probation, the study was guided by Alexander Astin's theory or student involvement as well as Nancy Schlossberg's Transition Theory. The nine participants who were interviewed, were eighteen or older, registered student at one of the eleven junior colleges in Belize, and were either on or had been on academic probation. No research on academic probation in junior colleges in Belize is found in the literature, therefore this study will help fill the gap in the literature by providing a description of the essences of lived experiences related to academic probation in Belize. The study aimed to educate scholars and practitioners about the underlying challenges faced by students on academic probation and detailed the effective use of internal and external resources and strategies by these students to overcome academic probation and successfully complete their studies.
