Soft Skills Development for Generation Z Workers through Coaching Experience in an Organizational Setting
Kanousha Ntchorere-Medoua
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, The Chicago School of Professional Psychology
Recognizing the significance of soft skills in workplace success, some organizations have implemented strategies such as internships, conferences, and workplace coaching to aid employees in developing these skills. Given that Generation Z employees are now entering the workforce in greater numbers, it becomes imperative to employ methods that resonate with their preferences and learning styles to facilitate the acquisition of these essential skills. While workplace coaching has been identified as a preferred training method for recent generational cohorts by researchers (Bozer & Jones, 2021; Lyons & Bandura, 2022), there is a notable gap in understanding the firsthand experiences of Generation Z employees regarding soft skills development through this approach. Considering projections that Generation Z employees will constitute 30 percent of the U.S. workforce by 2030 (Dunbina et al., 2020), it becomes increasingly vital for employers to gain insights into how best to support them in acquiring the necessary soft skills. Therefore, there is a pressing need to explore and comprehend the lived experiences of Generation Z employees in the context of soft skills development through workplace coaching to inform effective strategies for their professional growth and success. This qualitative phenomenological study aims to describe the lived experiences received by Generation Z employees through workplace coaching to develop soft skills. The soft skills that will be studied are self-awareness, emotional intelligence, communication skills, problem-solving, critical thinking, and people management (Ramnanan, 2022).
