Las Madres Son Lideres: Engaging Latina Immigrant Mothers' Cultural Wealth for School Improvement
Prisila Isais
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, California State University, Sacramento
This qualitative research project highlights the leadership journey and leadership influence of Latina immigrant mothers. A total of 31 participants engaged in seven Chicana/Latina Feminist Platicas. Key findings from this study include, Latina immigrant mothers have high aspiration for their children's future and educational journey and have a strong desire to be engaged at school sites. Additionally, their immigration journeys have helped shape their new identities and have positively affected the development of their leadership influence. They are aware of the lack of parent representation and of the condescending attitudes from some school staff. The participants identified culturally responsive parent engagement strategies and ways in which other parents may support their children's academic development at home. This study brings awareness to the valuable knowledge immigrant mothers possess and highlights ways in which educational leaders may collaborate with them. Implications from this study are to inform school leaders at state and national levels of the benefits of incorporating Latina immigrant mother's knowledge to increase children's academic achievement.
