Addressing Behavioral Needs of Students through Virtual at Home Learning
Shawndell A. Solomon
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Wilmington University (Delaware)
Chronic absenteeism has been and continues to be a serious problem within the United States. This dissertation in practice sought a solution to impact the problem of students exhibiting school refusal behaviors leading to truancy, at Dover High School while providing an avenue for successful academic performance in mathematics and English Language Arts. Participants in this dissertation in practice had previously experienced excessive absences which resulted in truancy. Students participated in virtual learning with a team of instructors who provided support as they completed their work. Virtual learning provided these students with an alternate route to acquiring their education and meeting success. Using a quantitative approach, data was collected to measure the success of students in this program. Results showed that virtual at home learning had a positive impact on high school students' attendance and grades. Students who participated in the program showed an improvement in both grade attainment of mathematics and ELA passing performance levels and a decrease in their number of days of absent allowing them to avoid legal truancy proceedings.
