Evaluating the Effectiveness of a Functional Communication Training (FCT) Package with Special Education Educators
Brianna J. Stockton
ProQuest LLC, Ed.S. Dissertation, University of Nebraska at Omaha
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a brief, in-person training package on Functional Communication Training (FCT). The training corresponded with content presented in the AFIRM e-learning modules on FCT with modifications to suit an in-person format including the addition of modeling, practice, and feedback to enhance knowledge and skills needed for FCT. Nine participants received the training based on meeting the following inclusionary criteria: fluency in the English language and currently serving students with significant intellectual or developmental disabilities such as ASD, challenging behavior, and limited functional communication skills. Training effectiveness was measured by analyzing participant knowledge prior to and after receiving training, participant skill performance after the training, and participant satisfaction of the training. After receiving the training, participant knowledge increased, participants were able to perform core skills needed for implementation of FCT and rated their satisfaction of the training package positively.
