Play Intervention and Its Impact on Social Skills of Preschool Children
Cassie Legband
ProQuest LLC, Ed.S. Dissertation, University of Nebraska at Omaha
Possessing sufficient social skills is a crucial aspect of child development. The level of social skill that a child has is a strong predictor of their future behavioral functioning and academic achievement. Due to the impact social skills have on a child's later life, having a better understanding of how to enhance social development is important. Teaching children play skills has been seen to improve their emotional functioning and cognitive abilities. However, there is limited research on the impact of play skills on preschool age children social skills. This study recruited four children from a local Nebraska Head Start preschool to measure and teach them individual play skills. Using the "Social Skills Improvement System Rating Scales," this study investigates the effectiveness of play intervention techniques on increasing social skills of preschool students using a multiple baseline design. Teaching the participants play skills was found to be an effective way to increase the overall social skills, but additional research should be conducted to analyze these two variables more extensively.
