Mariangela Cristal Hicks
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Alliant International University
Research has found that there is a link between the internalization of the model minority myth and impostor syndrome, as well as a link between impostor syndrome and mental health outcomes such as depression and anxiety among Asian Americans. This study investigated if social support could moderate the adverse effects of impostor syndrome among Asian American college students. This study used a quantitative design. The sample consisted of 78 participants identified as Asian Americans, 18 years old and above, currently enrolled in college, and residing in the United States. The results suggest that social support was not a significant moderator between impostor syndrome and academic adjustment. Social support also did not moderate between impostor syndrome and depression and anxiety. The possible explanation of the results and future research directions were discussed, as well as academic and clinical implications specifically for Asian American college students to help improve their academic adjustment and mental health.
