Time Poverty: Experiences of Women Caregivers in Higher Education
Jolene Sagan
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, California State University, Fresno
Women comprise most of the professionals in student affairs in higher education in the United States. They are tasked with supporting students and campus communities with complex challenges and needs. Women student affairs leaders simultaneously manage multiple roles and responsibilities, both personal and professional. The work of women student affairs leaders is both visible and invisible, frequently including parenting and caregiving responsibilities. The purpose of this study was to examine the lived experiences of women student affairs leaders in California, who are caregivers, with time poverty. Time poverty is a phenomenon that has been recognized as the feeling of having too many things to do and not enough time, which often impacts well-being and choices for women. Using a qualitative phenomenologically inspired inquiry with reflexive thematic analysis, the focus of this study was to illuminate the experiences of women professionals, who are also caregivers, with the resource of time and the phenomenon of time poverty. Understanding the lived experiences of these leaders and caregivers is essential to supporting this vital workforce, as well as the campus communities they support, their families, and communities.
