With heightened concerns regarding securing schools against random acts of school violence such as school shootings, school leaders have implemented many safety measures including arming schools with school security officers. As with any change, there can be unintended consequences, for example, school security officers may improve school safety while negatively affecting other important aspects of the school community such as school climate. The purpose of this study was to collect data from teachers on the impact school security officers have on; school climate, the social-emotional well-being of students, and the overall safety of the school environment. This quantitative case study surveyed kindergarten through eighth-grade teachers in fifteen rural schools in Sussex County, each of which has school security officers stationed in their buildings. The data collected from the survey was analyzed through an independent sample t-test to identify significant correlations between different subgroups. The study results indicated several items of statistical significance between novice (5 years or less of teaching experience) and veteran (more than 5 years of teaching experience) teachers. The results of the study provided valuable information to the researcher on the importance of having strong relationships between the school security officer and the school community in which they serve as well as having a job description that meets the needs of the school community. Based on the data collected, this study will share recommendations for future research, policy, and practice.
