Becoming a Teacher in California Public Schools: Barrier to Entry
Chhayleng Touch
ProQuest LLC, Psy.D. Dissertation, Alliant International University
There is a teacher shortage across the United States, and California, specifically, is experiencing a shortage. The shortage is compounded by teachers leaving the profession with reports of significant dissatisfaction (Darling-Hammond et al., 2023). Low enrollment in teacher preparation programs and a decline in individuals pursuing degrees in education indicate a connection to decreased public interest in the teaching profession. Current credentialing requirements are complex, arduous, and require significant investment. The opportunity cost to enter the teaching profession with current and professional requirements is too great. A Quick-Step guide streamlines how to become a teacher in California.
