The Influence of Interventions on Behavior Outcomes of Alternative Education Students
Reiko J. Hurd
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Grand Canyon University
This dissertation investigates the influence of interventions on the behavior outcomes of alternative education students in the Midwest United States, addressing the gap in literature regarding the implementation of School-Wide Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (SWPBIS) in alternative education settings. Grounded in B.F. Skinner's operant conditioning theory, the study aims to explore how teachers perceive various components of interventions affecting student behavior. Utilizing a qualitative descriptive design, data were collected through individual interviews and focus group discussions with teachers experienced in alternative education settings. Participants included teachers with at least one year of experience teaching in alternative schools in the Midwestern Region of the United States, selected through purposive sampling. Thematic analysis of the data revealed five key themes: the importance of building relationships and explaining the rationale behind interventions, the value of providing breaks and timeouts, the positive impact of positive reinforcement and mentoring on student behavior and self-esteem, the caution against the misuse of negative reinforcement leading to emotional distress and temporary compliance, and the necessity of incorporating restorative practices in punishment interventions. Implications of the study suggest that teachers can benefit from understanding how interventions influence behavior outcomes, guiding them in utilizing effective strategies such as breaks, positive reinforcement, and restorative practices. The findings contribute to the understanding of effective intervention methods in alternative education settings, potentially improving student outcomes and fostering positive learning environments.
