Multilingual Learner Success: The Role of Principal Leadership in Asset Based Practices

Latinx multilingual learners historically have struggled with meeting academic proficiencies within our educational system. Districts have implemented many strategies to support multilingual learners but have often fallen short of expectations, and therefore perpetuated academic struggles for Latinx multilingual learners. Considering that Latinx multilingual learners represent a substantial proportion of the student population in the United States, the urgency to address these issues is of great importance. Latinx multilingual learners require an asset based approach to their instruction that is centered on cultural capital and culturally relevant pedagogy. There is a need to understand the distinct social-emotional needs of multilingual learners. This study explores the role of principal leadership in leveraging these asset based approaches. This study employed a qualitative approach using a single case study research design. The study focused on four essential research questions that explored asset based instructional practices, social emotional needs, and principal leadership. The participants in this study were bounded by the following criteria: (a) elementary school site leaders in the large urban district; (b) led schools with a minimum of 25% students classified as multilingual learners; (c) be willing and committed to being interviewed a minimum of four times in a period of eight weeks; and (d) be open to discussing their leadership and decision making when it came to multilingual learners. The five school leaders were interviewed using open ended questions and their responses were coded and analyzed for themes. Based on the findings, recommendations were made for state, district, and school site alignment of systems in support of multilingual learners.
