Support and Interventions for Underrepresented Minority Students in STEM
Rashida Jamila David
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Fairleigh Dickinson University
This study focuses on The Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation (LSAMP) program. Its mission is to increase the number of underrepresented students in STEM majors. This study will explore the interventions and support strategies in The Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation (LSAMP) program that support underrepresented students, and to identify the challenges that they must face. The National Science Foundation has been funding this program since 1991. Studies have been conducted regarding LSAMPs success however, little has been studied about the exact impact of the program to current students of the program as well as graduates of the program. This study will provide an in depth understanding of Underrepresented Minority Students (URM) experiences in the LSAMP program at a private four-year university. This study will also examine the experiences and the impact that the LSAMP program has on students who graduated from the program. Kurt Lewin's Action Research Model will be utilized as a theoretical framework (Estrada et al., 2016). This study will be a qualitative study and consist of interviews with current students of the LSAMP program as well as students who graduated from the LSAMP program.
