College Search and the Perceived Impact of the Campus Visit
Kara Hebb
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northeastern University
This research study explored the perceived impact of the campus visit on the college search process and whether specific elements of the campus visit were perceived to have greater or lesser influence on individuals' college choices. The research sought to specifically address the questions: 1. What impact do matriculated undergraduate college students perceive the campus visit had on their college search process? 2. According to matriculated undergraduate college students, which elements of the campus visit were perceived as being most influential on their college choice? Using a qualitative research approach, seven undergraduate students, enrolled at the same mid-size, private, selective university in the northeastern United States participated in semi-structured interviews. Recordings of the interviews were transcribed using an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA from which three themes emerged: beginning the college search, breaking down the campus visit, and overall impact of the visit. Within the three themes, multiple sub-themes were also developed. The findings from this research fit within past research findings on the impact and importance of the college visit experience. The research added to aspects of the campus visits most critical to students and important for colleges and universities in attracting students.
