Lived Experiences of High School African Immigrants in Former U.S. Classrooms: A Single Experience
Marie-Gabrielle Ngono-Binelli
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Morgan State University
This qualitative study explores the lived experiences of former high school African immigrant students (AIS) in US classrooms. Using a theoretical framework that drew from funds of knowledge and racist nativism, the literature review focuses on risk factors and factors that promote success for AIS, including both deficit and asset-based approaches to language. The methodology used for this study was phenomenology using hybrid inductive and deductive thematic analysis. The study offers implications for teachers and schools and recommendations for future research. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
