Stigma, Sense of Belonging, and Educational Outcomes: A Quantitative Approach to Understanding the Internal Lateral Transfer Student Experience

The internal lateral transfer student population, defined as students who transition from one bachelor's granting campus to another within one multicampus institution, is often left out of the literature in the field of transfer studies (Cepeda et al., 2021; Jaggars et al., 2023). The present study investigates the relationship between stigma, sense of belonging, and educational outcomes for this student population. Using survey responses and institutional data collected from 349 internal lateral transfer students at one institution, quantitative analyses were employed to: ascertain whether internal lateral transfer students experienced transfer shock; explore the relationship between experiences with stigma and reported sense of belonging on post-transition GPA; and understand how student characteristics influence students' sense of belonging and experience with stigma. The findings indicate that the students in the present study experienced transfer shock; the median post-transition GPA decline was 0.2 GPA points, with 63% of students experiencing some level of transfer shock. Student characteristics such as academic college, campus of origin, housing situation, involvement on campus, transfer capital, and coping skills were influential students' reported experiences with stigma and their sense of belonging. The present study found that stigma and sense of belonging did not influence students' likelihood to experience transfer shock or their first semester post-transfer GPA. Ultimately, this research study seeks to shed light on this student population and enhance practitioners' and scholars' understanding of the broader factors influencing the educational experiences and outcomes of internal lateral transfer students.
