The Impact of Student Voice and Student-Driven Leadership Programs
Miranda Shorty
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, New England College
This doctoral dissertation was a study that assessed the impacts of a student-driven student voice and student leadership program in a secondary public school in a rural district in Maine. Using a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods, this study gathered evidence of the impacts of the Student Summit Leadership Program (SSLP) on students and their school. The study addressed the following research questions: (a) In what ways does engagement in the SSLP impact high school student participants and their school? and (b) To what extent does a SSLP impact the self-efficacy and collective efficacy of high school students? The impact of this experience on the participants and their school was analyzed to provide evidence to support future changes in education that can provide students more opportunities like the program operationalized in this study. I found the impact of the SSLP was described by the students as providing them an opportunity to use student voice and collaborative work to become change agents that influenced their school, influenced their community, and impacted their future and the future of their school. The findings were supported by the analysis of the descriptive statistics, which suggested any level of exposure or participation in the SSLP increased students' feelings of collective efficacy. The findings also supported future research in the areas of student-driven student voice programs, student collective efficacy, educational policy reform, and ongoing professional development for adults in education.
