Evaluating the Usability of the WellSAT WSCC: A School Wellness Policy Assessment Tool

School districts have been encouraged to integrate health and learning services in an effort to best support the whole child. To provide guidance for this integration, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the ASCD (formerly the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development) created the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) model, which was released in 2014. A key piece within the model is the coordination of policies, processes, and practices across the different components that work to support the whole child. To date, tools to support policy coordination have been limited, prompting development of the WellSAT WSCC. Next steps in the iterative development of the WellSAT WSCC involve ensuring optimal user experiences. In this convergent mixed methods study, five school-based stakeholders were interviewed to evaluate the usability (i.e., effectiveness, efficiency, and satisfaction) of the WellSAT WSCC. Interviews consisted of four parts: (1) stakeholders sharing their thoughts while exploring the platform, (2) stakeholders using the platform to score a sample policy, (3) stakeholders completing the System Usability Scale (Brooke, 1996), a validated measure of perceived usability, and (4) stakeholders answering nine open-ended questions about their satisfaction with the tool. Results indicated that participants perceived the WellSAT WSCC to be of above-average user experience. Recommended improvements included adding more information about the tool, providing guidance for making policy changes, and improving platform aesthetics. These improvements would ideally support more accurate evaluation results, faster completion time, and more consistent perceptions of satisfaction.
