An Novel Web-Based Training Program for Caregivers of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, University of Connecticut
Behavioral intervention with parent participation is effective in reducing symptoms of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), but access to intervention is limited. The current study explored whether a novel, self-directed, online program would (a) be comprehensible and acceptable to caregivers of children with ASD, (b) increase caregiver knowledge of behavioral strategies, and (c) increase caregiver self-efficacy. Sixty-three parent-child dyads were randomly assigned to the intervention or waitlist control group. Caregivers in the intervention group received access to the online training program on evidence-based teaching and behavior management techniques. Caregivers rated this video training program as highly comprehensible and valuable. The program significantly increased caregivers' knowledge of effective teaching strategies and modestly increased aspects of parents' self-efficacy. Results support the use of this self-directed training program to teach caregivers evidence-based intervention principles that are typically used by professionals who deliver intervention to children with ASD.
