Teacher Apprenticeship: West Virginia
Region 5 Comprehensive Center
Teacher apprenticeship programs are a new and exciting structure that help strengthen and diversify the educator workforce by offering an alternative approach to teacher licensure. Often providing financial assistance, mentorship, and classroom experience, these programs help pave the way for high-quality candidates, benefitting schools, students, and communities. The West Virginia Grow Your Own (GYO) Teacher Apprenticeship Pathway is the second registered teacher apprenticeship program in the country. The program focuses on recruiting high school students with an interest in teaching and provides them with free dual enrollment classes and a shortened college timeline. Explore a snapshot of West Virginia's GYO stats, history, and lessons learned.
