Black/African American Womens Perfectionism in a Gendered and Racialized Society: What Can This Mean for the Frost Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale?
Monique Nia Golden
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, University of Connecticut
The dissertation investigates the structural reliability and cross-cultural invariance of the Frost Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale (F-MPS; Frost, Marten, Lahart, & Rosenblate, 1990). Principal components analysis (PCA), Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFAs), single and multigroup Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFAs) were conducted with 609 female participants who identified as (n = 220) as Black/African American and (n= 389) who identified as white. The researcher finds strong evidence that suggests the F-MPS may not be a reliable measure for Black/African American women. Fit indices from factor analyses examining the degree of construct equivalence and measurement invariance show similar instances of poor model fit across both subsamples. The finding supports previous research indicating the factorization of the F-MPS may be different across contexts. Factorial instability may adversely affect the reliability of observed scores. Therefore, interpretations of cross-cultural comparisons may not be valid. In addition, participant open-ended responses suggest that statistically significant group differences found on the measure may be consequences of its design, and not due to race and sociocultural factors, as some researchers have claimed.
