Millennial Experiences in a Multigenerational Student Affairs Workplace
Rebecca Bury
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, University of Georgia
The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore how millennial student affairs professionals experience a multigenerational workplace in four-year, public institutions in the same state. Using Kahn's (1990) theory of engagement and a narrative research design, this study organizes data from millennial student affairs professionals to illuminate their experiences in multigenerational student affairs workplaces. This study aimed to understand how millennial student affairs professionals experience themselves as a millennial, how they experience a multigenerational workplace, and the factors that contribute to their workplace engagement. Eight millennial student affairs professionals shared their overall experiences inside the student affairs workplace. The participants described their experiences interacting with baby boomers and generation X and discussed how they feel valued and trusted at work. The participants describe their experiences of being stereotyped and negatively perceived, positive supervisor interactions, and their desire for more flexible work environments. Several themes developed after conducting the research for the study. After completing this study, the field of student affairs has a better understanding of the experiences of millennial student affairs professionals. This study is a concerted effort to create awareness, dialogue, and change in student affairs workplaces. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
