ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, The University of Alabama
In recent decades, the focus and approach to college students' development and engagement had evolved to include more holistic student developmental factors (i.e., mental, emotional, financial, social/spiritual, and physical wellness) as higher education professionals assisted students in multiple areas of development. Higher education professionals had begun to institute developmental initiatives and programs to meet the holistic needs of their student populations, following research that suggested that attending college carried holistic developmental implications. After the Coronavirus (COVID-19) Pandemic, administrators of American higher education institutions became more aware of these holistic student developmental needs. The effects of COVID-19 had only urged higher education professionals to consider holistic approaches to student development and wellness. This quantitative study was designed to examine the effects of a holistic wellness program, LEADwell, on participating undergraduate business students' perceptions and understanding of self-care, at a major Research 1 (R-1) institution, The University of Alabama (UA). This study examined 1,402 surveys to determine the effectiveness of the relationship between the Culverhouse College of Businesses LEADwell holistic development and wellness sessions and participating students' perceptions and understanding of the self-efficacy to self-care. Findings of the secondary analysis indicated that attending a LEADwell Wellness session had a very large effect on participating business students' abilities to self-care. Additional findings indicated the very large effects regarding improvements of students' psychologically, physically, self-care abilities after attending a LEADwell Session.
