Exploring Well-Being for Black Women Student Affairs Administrators
Challen Wellington
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, The Florida State University
This study explores the mental and emotional well-being of Black women Student Affairs administrators by examining their experiences while working at historically White institutions. Their experiences were examined using critical narrative inquiry and Black Feminist Thought to understand the layers of race and gender on their well-being in an academic institution. The data was collected using individual interviews and sister circle conversations to provide multiple touchpoints with the Black women's stories. The participants' stories add context to the conversation about the well-being of Student Affairs administrators and how their specific identities influence their experiences in these spaces. This study showcased a need for Black women's communal spaces on campuses and the necessity of administrators establishing boundaries because the university structure does not provide boundaries and balance without requirement.
