A Quantitative Study of the Factors Influencing How Police Officers in Jamaica Value Higher Education Qualifications
Terrence Stephen Bent
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Delaware State University
The impact of higher education in policing has been the subject of debate and research for over a century. Several commissions have resulted in the enactment of legislation and implementation of programs to support higher education in police organizations worldwide. The purpose of this study was to understand how police officers in Jamaica valued their higher education qualifications. The value of higher education was defined within the dimensions of performance, promotion, and utility in policing. The independent variables for this study were age, gender, and length of service. A quantitative research design using the cross-sectional methodology examined the relationship between the variables of the study. Responses were obtained from 229 police officers in the Jamaica Constabulary Force. The data analysis methods used were ANOVA, chi square and t-tests. The respondents opined that job performance was valued highly by degree holding police officers and length of service was the variable showing a consistent association with the dimensions for the value for higher education. Recommendations included broader studies of the impact of higher education in policing and a requirement for higher education qualifications at police entry level. An agenda for future studies included the involvement regional police education leaders and the effects on female police officers.
