A Concurrent Mixed Methods Study of the Subjective User Perceptions of University Website Content Using Frame Semantics
Dorothy F. Slater
ProQuest LLC, D.Ed. Dissertation, University of Louisiana at Lafayette
This dissertation is an interdisciplinary effort to combine the fields of education, linguistics, and technology. The practical aims of this study are an attempt to offer insights and avenues for the development and administration of better online presences for institutions of higher learning. While the theoretical purpose aimed to utilize semantic frame analysis to identify the underlying frames of website users and try to ascertain whether their frames are related to how they judge websites. This was done with a focus particularly on the subjective perceptual experiences of university website users, which have been largely ignored in the academic literature, and utilized the Web-CLIC Questionnaire and FrameNet semantic frame analysis as the foundation of this study's methodology. Results of this study demonstrated that university website users utilize patterns of frame which vary systematically by user characteristics, and that these patterns of frame significantly relate to the degree of perceived favorability of website use by users. The central questions of this study being: What are the underlying perceptual frames of university website users? Do the underlying perceptual frames of university website users vary by specific user characteristics?, and Is there a relationship between the underlying perceptual frames of university website users and the Web-CLIC Questionnaire?
