School Mental Health Teams and the Implementation of Comprehensive School Mental Health Services: The Impact of Team Composition and Multidisciplinarity

ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Indiana University
School mental health services are essential for addressing youth mental health needs. To accomplish this goal, school teams manage the implementation of school mental health services. However, there is limited research on how SMH team composition and multidisciplinary impacts the delivery of services. To address this knowledge gap, this study used survey data from school principals to investigate the relationship between how well school mental health services were implemented and the multidisciplinarity and composition of school mental health teams. Results indicated that team multidisciplinarity and including community mental health providers and caregivers on teams had a significant positive relationship with increasing service delivery. The presence of a well-implemented school mental health team was also significantly positively associated with service delivery. The inclusion of increasing numbers of administrators was not found to be associated with increases in the delivery of services. Together, these results demonstrate evidence for who should be involved with school mental health teams and why team implementation is critical for increasing the implementation of school mental health services.
