Interpreting Attachment Behaviors in Early Childhood Providers' Interactions with Children At-Risk for Language Disorders
Megan A. Bergeron
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, University of Louisiana at Lafayette
This dissertation investigated the caregiving relationships between infants and nonparental caregivers in early childcare settings through the lens of attachment and language behaviors. This study sought to provide an opportunity to extend our understanding of the socioemotional factors that influence children's development in their daily lives. Five infant caregivers at three different daycare centers were observed as they interacted with the infants in their care during normal daily routines. Through a basic, interpretive methodology using principles of ethnography, this investigation sought to identify, describe, and interpret the social actions and beliefs of these caregivers. Over the course of three weeks, data were collected from the primary participants (the caregivers) through participant observations and audio/video recordings of these observations. Additional data, serving as a secondary dataset, were collected from semi-structured interviews with the caregivers as well as the infants' parents. The attachment behaviors arising from infant-caregiver interactions were described in detail and triangulated via secondary data sources. Results of this investigation demonstrated how the caregivers' attachment relationship influenced their language behaviors when interacting with infants in early childcare settings. Twelve distinct attachment behaviors, three categories of language behaviors, and seven subsequent speech patterns were identified and described in detail.
